Philanthropic Studies is a major that teaches the particulars of nonprofit organizations, philanthropists, and volunteering.
Course Work
Because of the courses I have taken in my four years at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, I have a great understanding of each of the following:
- A history of global and American philanthropy
- Contemporary approaches to philanthropy
- How to start a nonprofit organization
- Grant proposals
- Giving and volunteering
- Ethics and values in philanthropy
Why I Chose Philanthropic Studies?
Originally, I did not choose Philanthropic Studies as my major. I had chosen something else that was not fueling my passion to assist in helping others. Halfway through my freshman year of college I changed my major to Philanthropic Studies because I eventually would love to work in the nonprofit sector and have a great deal of knowledge of the nonprofit world before jumping right in. The courses that I mentioned in the section above are some of the most valuable courses in the major curriculum.
